Tariffs on Canada and Mexico Will Go Forward

President Trump indicated on Monday that his 25 percent tariffs on Canada and Mexico will start “on schedule” on March 4.  Earlier this month, President Trump announced tariffs on Canada and Mexico, which were subsequently paused for 30 days and one month, respectively, to allow additional time for negotiations.  Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum appeared confident that her administration would reach agreements with President Trump before the deadline. The Canadian government has reportedly implemented enhanced border security measures and appointed a Canadian Border Czar to work with the United States on border security, though it is unclear whether the measures will satisfy President Trump.  Both Canada and Mexico have indicated that they will implement retaliatory tariffs on U.S. imports if President Trump follows through with the tariffs.
